BRIEF BIO:
(Curriculum Vitae [pdf], Google Scholar Profile [here])
I am currently the Director of Data Science at STATS - focussing on maximizing the value of sports tracking data. Previously, I was an Associate Research Scientist at Disney Research Pittsburgh, where I conducted research into Sports Analytics and Audience Analysis. Before that, I was at the Robotics Institute at CMU as well as at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh where I conducted my research on using facial expressions to aid in the diagnosis of medical conditions (such as Pain, Depression and Facial Paralysis) with Prof. Jeff Cohn.
I received my Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with first class honors from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, in 2003. I then completed my PhD degree from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia in 2008, within the Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technology (SAIVT) Laboratory. My final PhD thesis was entitled “Lipreading Across Multiple Views”, with the main contribution focus being on recognizing visual speech regardless of the speaker’s head position. During my PhD, I was fortunate to be a research intern with the Human Language Technology group at IBM T.J. Watson Research Centre in Yorktown Heights in New York, USA in 2006. I was also a visiting scholar at the RI at Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. Also in 2007, my paper entitled “Pose-Invariant Lipreading” won best student paper award at the “INTERSPEECH” conference at Antwerp in Belgium. At the 2014 WACV conference we won best paper award. Recently, at the 2016 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, we won best paper in the research track.
I serve as a reviewer for many top-tier journals and international conferences. I have co-organized the KDD workshop on “Large-Scale Sports Analytics” the past three years (2014 - 2016) and was also co-organizer for the 2013 ICCV workshop on “Vision-Based Sports Analytics” and the 2008 International Conference on Auditory-Visual Speech Processing (AVSP 2008).
In addition to my research interests, I am a keen traveller as well as a sports fan. If you need to find me I am most often found watching the Australian football or cricket team at various locations around the globe.
